Beyond the blue
In the summer of 2017, we set out to create a film to tell the story of Swim Dem Crew.
Beyond The Blue is that film.
Beyond The Blue is a documentary that explores the origins of the crew and the relationship between co-founders Peigh Asante and Nathaniel Cole, both within and beyond the water.
The short film not only documents the love they both share for the water but its also raises awareness for the importance of mental health and the relationship it shares with sport.

There was no budget and no brands involved, just a team of creatives that shared our vision. We began the process by doing core thinking about what the reasons were for starting and continuing to invest time into Swim Dem, what makes us special and why our community is so important to us.
Our core values then helped drive the creative direction for the project. We focused on intimate hero angles, as well as symmetry to demonstrate that community is just as important as swimming for us.
Beyond The Blue was recently screened at The Institute of Contemporary Arts as a part of the MOTION PICTURE event that celebrated ‘five films ahead of the curve. There was a Q&A hosted by acclaimed filmmaker Adeyemi Michael where Swim Dem Crew discussed how to amplify creativity, how to fund your film and explored the importance of good storytelling.
MOTION PICTURE was a part of the Playback Film Festival which features films made by emerging artists – premiering 95 short films alongside 240 ground-breaking and award-winning works completed over the last three years.
