Furthest Point West

In 2023, Swim Dem Crew headed to Dakar, Senegal to take part in the 34th annual Dakar-Gorée crossing. It’s a race that honours the victims of slavery by recreating a journey (in reverse) that escaping enslaved people who do in order to reach freedom on the mainland from Gorée island.

While the islands history is contested, the swim was an extraordinary way for us to connect to a story that was much bigger than us.

Furthest Point West explores our story at Swim Dem Crew, brotherhood and what it means to make change (or waves) in an industry that doesn't have the lenses to see you clearly.

To celebrate the online release of the documentary, we are re-printing our 2023 commemorative t-shirts and selling our photozines and prints from the trip.

Swim Dem Crew celebrated the launch of their new film at Dijonss in East London (link to event images here).

“This was the first swim that we’ve done where we’re not the minority,” says Nathaniel Cole, Co-Founder of Swim Dem Crew.

“You’re swimming in waters where some people just didn’t make it” says Peigh Asante, Co-Founder of Swim Dem Crew.
